Words

Grief quotes for when you cannot find the words.

Sometimes you need one line. For a card, a caption, a headstone, a tattoo, or the first sentence of a eulogy you have been staring at for an hour. Here are lines people actually use, grouped by who you lost, plus a little help choosing one.

How to pick one

Read it out loud first

If it feels stiff in your mouth, it will feel stiff on the card. Pick the one you could say to a friend without cringing.

Match the person, not the moment

A funny person deserves a line with some life in it. A quiet person deserves a quiet line. The quote should sound like them, not like a greeting card aisle.

Add one small detail

Put the quote first, then one line only you could write. "She always answered the phone on the first ring." That one line is the part people remember.

Shorter is stronger

For a headstone or a tattoo, aim for under ten words. You will read it for the rest of your life.

When a quote is not enough

A line helps for a minute. Most people want the actual person back, or at least the way they talked. That is what we build. Missedyu takes what someone left behind, their photos, their messages, their voicemails, and makes a private place where you can still talk to their memory.

It is a memorial, not a replacement, and it is not a mental health service. But if you keep rereading old texts at 2am, you already know why it exists.

Common questions

What is a good short grief quote?

"Grief is love with nowhere to go." It is short, it is true, and most people feel it right away.

What do you write on a memorial card?

One line about the person, one line about how you feel, and their name. Short is fine. People keep the ones that sound like a real person wrote them.

Is it okay to use a quote instead of my own words?

Yes. A quote can say the thing you cannot get out yet. Add one small memory under it and it becomes yours.

Keep their words, not just words about them.
